In case there was any doubt that John McCain’s decision to suspend his campaign is a cynical attempt to rescue his sinking quest for the presidency, the media tonight got ahold of the official McCain-Palin talking points distributed to supporters describing what to say about…suspending the campaign. The campaign is not pleased that what was meant for supporters’ eyes only made it into the public domain. According to PolitickerCO:
In suspending his campaign to address the continuing financial crisis, John McCain’s campaign is pushing the theme of “having both parties come together to solve this problem,” according to campaign talking points inadvertently released Wednesday.
In a list of talking points written up for campaign volunteers, the McCain campaign stated that “this is a time to put our country first. We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved.”
The memo states that “America faces a historic crisis in our financial system, and we must pass legislation to address this crisis.”
McCain is “confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people,” according to the memo.
McCain announced Wednesday that he directed his campaign to suspend Friday night’s presidential debate between him and Democratic nominee Barack Obama and will suspend all campaigning and advertising.
The talking points were accidentally sent out to members of the Colorado press early Wednesday afternoon by McCain spokesperson Tom Kise.
