Question to McCain: Would You Meet With the Leader of Spain?; Answer: Where Are My Shoes?

Spain is a member of NATO and a completely modern democracy.  When asked whether he would meet with Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, John McCain said

Honestly, I have to analyze our relationships, situations, and priorities, but I can assure you that I will establish closer relationships with our friends, and I will stand up to those who want to harm the United States.

In addition,

When asked about Spain and the president of Spain, McCain responded about “Mexico” (twice), “Latin America,” and “the hemisphere.” All of those are references to Latin America and not Spain. Why would McCain answer a question about Spain – four questions about Spain, in fact – by talking about Latin America?

Here’s the audio (the relevant portion begins at around 3:00):

Again, in case your name is Sarah Palin or Tucker Bounds: Spain is in Europe.

The McCain campaign says:

The questioner asked several times about Senator McCain’s willingness to meet Zapatero (and ID’d him in the question so there is no doubt Senator McCain knew exactly to whom the question referred). Senator McCain refused to commit to a White House meeting with President Zapatero in this interview.

My count may be off, but so far it looks like in a McCain-Palin administration, we can look forward to all out war in or at least hostile relations with Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Russia, and now Spain.

Maybe Condi Rice needs to make one of these for him:
