Fussy Right-Wing Muckraker Reacts Predictably to Powell Endorsement of Obama

Reputed double-minority Matt Drudge has the red headlines up at his site. To him, the news of the day is not that Colin Powell today endorsed Barack Obama, but that he (Powell) claims that the endorsement has nothing to do with race. Drudge helpfully reminds readers that Powell previously said that having a black president would be good for the country:

Oh and in case you’re unable to pick up on the subtlety, Drudge provides a photo of the retired general.  Turns out, he’s black too. So, you know — take that into account when reading about the endorsement.

Ed Morrissey of my favorite Republican site commendably refuses to “impugn Powell’s motives.” And while I’m generally not one to pick through comments, these are not to be ignored:

I’m sure it has nothing to do with race.

A Bush administration official, and prime convincer of the need to invade Iraq in 2003, endorses pretty much based on race, to endorse Obama. Big win for Obama. Now, if he can just get Bush himself to endorse, the circle is complete.

Judge not by the colour of a person’s skin, but by the content of their character.

I’m skeptical that is how Colin Powell played this endorsement.

But hey, maybe it’s the “hope and change” rhetoric that I’ve never believed..

Rush Limbaugh knows exactly what this endorsement is all about:

Secretary Powell says his endorsement is not about race… OK, fine. I am now researching his past endorsements to see if I can find all the inexperienced, very liberal, white candidates he has endorsed. I’ll let you know what I come up with.

Pat Buchanan later joined in, saying:

Alright, we gotta ask a question, look would Colin Powell be endorsing Obama if he were a white liberal Democrat?
