Yesterday, it was Alabamians acting in a way most people would expect of them. Today, a group of California Republicans are feeling a little defensive after getting caught creating and distributing this vile, monumentally dumb Obama food stamp “parody.”
My favorite part of this story is not the schadenfreude at seeing these racists get busted, and it’s not even the inevitable over-punctuation of the original forwarding email (“Obama talks about all those presidents that got their names on bills. If elected, what bill would he be on????? Food Stamps, what else!”). As we all know, the more question marks, the funnier the joke. That’s just humor 101.
No, my favorite part of this story is the explanation provided by Diane Fedele, who reportedly created and distributed the “parody.” She said:
I didn’t see it the way that it’s being taken. I never connected. It was just food to me. It didn’t mean anything else.
See, she could have selected foie gras, a baby field green salad, lapin a la cocotte over lightly salted cavatelli, autumn berries and a glass of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild (1982). But by some complete coincidence, she included ribs, fried chicken, watermelon and Kool-Aid which she later found out all happen to be associated with stereotypes of black people. Who knew!!1!!!11!
One thing’s for certain: With that kind of explanation, Diane Fedele’s got a bright future in her party.
