Disenfranchised, Oppressed, Rich White People Take to the Streets For Mass Teabagging

Update: Here’s the show.

Tonight on Partisan Gridlock (Wednesdays from 10-11PM on KPFT)…

It’s tax day. Well-heeled white elitists from all over the country are organizing and participating in faux-populist “tea parties” to protest the oppressive tax rates (as high as 39%) they’ll be paying next year. Protesting with them are scores of hapless yokels who think President Obama is a foreigner who wants to confiscate their guns.

In Austin, Republican State Representative Brandon Creighton of Conroe introduced a resolution affirming Texas’ right to assert sovereignty under the 10th Amendment. Creighton’s resolution accuses the federal government of violating states’ rights and seeks to admonish the president not to do it again. Read HCR 50 here and watch Governor Perry endorse it here:

Representative Creighton will join us to describe his resolution in more detail and tell us why, in his view, its important for Texas to assert sovereignty on tax day.  Joining us as well will (we hope) be Harris County Democratic Party Chairman Gerry Birnberg.

  1. Hmmm….

I have to concede that I am white.

    I am not wealthy.

I doubt anyone who knows me would consider me an “elitist”. (Funny how the right was blasted for using the “E” word on President Obama during the campaign.)

I do not recall if President Obama ever claimed about “coming for the guns.” However, the people he has hired for various posts are very anti-gun.

His Attorney General, Eric Holder argued for the Washington DC gun ban to the Supreme Court. His Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel argued that if you are the FBI’s no fly list, you should not be allowed to own a gun.

The FBI no fly list in my mind is Unconstitutional. So being on the a Unconstitutional list takes precedence over a Constitutional Amendment.

I will not defend Bush and his actions. Bush should have been impeached. and he should be prosecuted. He spent too much money. The thing is Obama is as well. The one thing both men have in common, their support of Wall Street.

President Obama as a Senator supported the Banker Bailout and the FISA Bill.

President Obama drags the Automotive Industry over the coal for wanting 30 Billion Dollar loan, but he stands attention and salutes and says “YES SIR” when the Wall Street Bankers call for money.

    Just like Bush did….

Geoff, I do not think you really understand the issues involved with the Tea Parties. A lot of people out there are not Bush supporters either.

The mess was not just created by Bush. Clinton’s watch opened the door for Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac. Clinton repealed the Glass-Steagall Act. These actions opened the door for the banking crisis we are suffering from now.

I did not vote for Clinton, Bush, or Obama.

This is not a Republican or Democratic Issue. Both Parties have blood on hands.

The wire tapping actually started under Clinton.

BTW.. Ron Paul was critical of the Bush Administration for the wireless warrant taps. Hmm.. A Republican….

    NOW
    Geoff
Can the Texas Governor be recalled?

I think calling for a treasonous act in a public speech might be enough to get something going.

    Is there a process?

    Thanks

  3. Clever post no doubt about the so-called “teabaggers” but factually inaccurate.

First, the tax rate is not “as high as 39%” unless you exclude numerous other federal, state and local taxes.

Second, many seem obsessed with this idea that 95% of Americans will receive a federal tax cut under Obama. Do you seriously think that we can continue to raise spending (by extreme amounts) and cut taxes? Did Obama not campaign against just that, i.e., that Bush increased spending and lowered taxes — a recipe for financial disaster?

Third, you seem to miss the point on spending. Taxes are a two-sided issue. When one complains of taxes, one impliedly complains of spending. But here, we don’t even have to imply it because those who turned out on Tax Day so clearly demonstrated that they were upset with spending. With that in mind, what do you think must happen if we increase spending beyond what our current tax revenues can support? We must then in the future raise taxes.

Finally, your disparagement of those who turned out on Tax Day to protest what they think is wrong–out of control government spending with obvious future, difficult tax implications–is inappropriate. You should focus more on just the facts on not partisan swipes… you are a clever writer so you don’t need to resort to such ad hominem tactics.

  4. Like the other “teabaggers,” Gov. Perry and the GOP in Texas are skating very close to secession and sedition.

Perry quoted Sam Houston, but significantly did not mention that as Governor, Houston opposed Texas secession at the beginning of the Civil War, and was physically evicted from his office.

In 1860, Sam Houston predicted: “Let me tell you what is coming. After the sacrifice of countless millions of treasure and hundreds of thousands of lives you may win Southern independence, but I doubt it. The North is determined to preserve this Union.”

Rick Perry is a numbskull and pipsqueak compared to Sam Houston. Texans would be well advised not to follow his lead, and to remove him as Governor.
