Sarah Palin has done more for the United States this year than she probably ever thought possible. Over the last year she has traveled the country and has demonstrated what true change looks like. She is a fighter of morals, a maverick politician, and an extremely intellegent [sic] person. She is a remarkable woman and she needs to run for President in 2012.

The electorate may have prefered [sic] Barack Obama over John McCain, but in 2012 voters will have a different decision. A choice between right and wrong, moral vs. unmoral [sic]. Most importantly, we will have a choice between more of the same, and change.

Via Hot Air: David Frum says Nicole Wallace is the source of negative leaks about Sarah Palin. He essentially says that she’s a vicious bitch, but he’s got a better vocabulary than I do.

And speaking of negative leaks about Sarah Palin, the latest is that she didn’t know that Africa was a continent, not a country:

Also, Palin may have squeezed the RNC for more than $150,000 in new clothes — and they weren’t all for her:

NEWSWEEK has also learned that Palin’s shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain’s top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family-clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent “tens of thousands” more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as “Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast,” and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

In other GOP implosion news, House Republicans say that the problem in the last couple of cycles is that their party wasn’t conservative enough.  That’s right, double down on Bush conservatism. See you in 2010.

Pawlenty is young, well spoken, and popular in a Democratic state. Had he been picked, McCain today might’ve been competitive in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan. McCain knew better, of course, selected Sarah Palin and is today on the verge of a landslide loss, which, according to the polls, is due at least in part to Palin.

Today, Pawlenty appeared on CNN’s Late Edition.  At about 6:44, note the word Pawlenty doesn’t use when asked whether the selection of Sarah Palin was a “mistake” (hint: it begins with “n” and ends with “o”):

“They’ll be debating that question for a long time.”  A long, long time.  During the Republican presidential primary in 2012, for example.

Why does Larry get to be reprogrammed when Carly Fiorina got the boot?

In a conservative radio interview that aired in Washington, D.C. Friday morning, Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin said she fears her First Amendment rights may be threatened by “attacks” from reporters who suggest she is engaging in a negative campaign against Barack Obama.

Palin told WMAL-AM that her criticism of Obama’s associations, like those with 1960s radical Bill Ayers and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, should not be considered negative attacks. Rather, for reporters or columnists to suggest that it is going negative may constitute an attack that threatens a candidate’s free speech rights under the Constitution, Palin said.

“If [the media] convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations,” Palin told host Chris Plante, “then I don’t know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media.”

First, criticism of criticism isn’t censorship. It’s debate, argument, and is protected by…the First Amendment. Proposing that the government act to stymie criticism of Palin — as she seems to suggest — is a violation of the First Amendment.

Second, and this (again) is just Civics 101, the media isn’t the government.  It takes government action for First Amendment rights to be violated.  For Palin’s right to speak freely to have been unconstitutionally chilled, the government, not the “mainstream media” must’ve had a hand in the chilling. 

If I show up at my local ABC affiliate and demand to be put on the air to discuss whatever’s on my mind, my constitutional rights haven’t been violated when they say no. One needn’t be a lawyer to know that. It’s common sense.

Now by ‘smart,’ I don’t refer to a person who is wily or calculating or nimble in the way of certain talented athletes who we admire but suspect don’t really have serious brains in their skulls. I mean, instead, a mind that is thoughtful, curious, with a discernable pattern of associative thinking and insight. Palin asks questions, and probes linkages and logic that bring to mind a quirky law professor I once had. Palin is more than a ‘quick study’; I’d heard rumors around the campaign of her photographic memory and, frankly, I watched it in action. She sees. She processes. She questions, and only then, she acts. What is often called her ‘confidence’ is actually a rarity in national politics: I saw a woman who knows exactly who she is.

That’s Elaine Lafferty arguing in the Daily Beast that “Sarah Palin is very smart.” To add credibility to the claim, Lafferty points out that she’s a Democrat.  Of course, she’s also a Palin “consultant” and she doesn’t mention that she’s paid by the McCain campaign for her time. 

It makes sense, really. Most people who can put a sentence together would have to be paid to argue in public that Sarah Palin is anywhere near “smart,” much less “very smart.”

And by the way, if Sarah Palin is so smart, why doesn’t she hold a press conference? Why is the campaign preventing her from answering questions? Why when she gives interviews to local reporters does the campaign require the reporter to clear the topics of the interview with the campaign ahead of time?

Oh, that’s right. Because people like Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric are mean to her, making her get “annoyed” and in her annoyance she purposefully gives answers that make her look like a complete moron. That’s not because she is a complete moron, of course. Damn elite media.
